It was an easy climb to the next lake, but that was only the beginning as I had another serious climb to the ridgeline.
I created my own switchbacks, took several quick "breathers" and before long I was bushwhacking my way across the tundra to the Mt. Ida trail. As I neared the trail, something caught my attention. I heard a strange sound, it wasn't marmots, but I wasn't sure exactly what it was.
Then I caught movement out of the corner of my eye, so I froze. I had walked up on a family of ptarmigan. The mother was calling out to her little ones. How many do you see? Finally, after roughly 12 miles of hiking I found myself back at the crowded trailhead - just as the afternoon storms started rolling through.
I felt pretty good considering the elevation gains. The fact I did very little acclimatization. I wasn't even disappointed that I came out smelling of skunk, the scenery and the wildlife more than made up for it! I had a very aggressive schedule planned out before I met up with my partner for the backpacking portion of my trip.
From this Mt. Ida trailhead, I drove to Leadville with plans to add a couple of 14ers to my list. I set up camp near the Mt. M***ve trailhead. I didn't set an alarm. I figured I would let me body tell me when it was ready to start. I need to update my hiking blog, it's been a couple of years.
Again, I felt great (relatively speaking) when I made it back to the vehicle. I would be correct!

The creek bed was sun-bleached, there hadn't been any water here in a while. I was so angry at the Forest Service for sending us on this trip. I went back to the camp. Told the others the shituation. Between the six of us we had 3 litres of water, also not good.
Ned said he would look upstream for some water. Nico volunteered to go down stream. Ned came back shortly and said he found a patch of damp ground that we might be able to dig out for some water. He told us he had found a nasty puddle some ways down creek. As a group we decided that this mission was over.
Our only goal now was to get the outta here. We would take this water, wait for night fall, and then head back to Dough Flat in the cooler temperatures of the early morning. Ned, Johnny and I went downstream to gather as much more water as we could. Just a bit past the old Tin Can Cabin site we found the water.
It wasn't much, maybe inch or two deep, lots of bugs, but man I was glad it was there. The sun had gone down before we started back to camp so we had to find our way back using headlamps. When we got back to camp Craig made some food, but I just wanted to drink.
We were all pretty tired, so we settled down for some sleep before the climb out.

We decided since this would be an all day appointment, we would head to the Muscle Sholes area. Simmons Tires where the Jeep got 4 new tires. Tennessee River to Florence where we spent the rest of our day shopping, having lunch, and shopping a little longer. By late afternoon, it was time to head back to Red Bay to pick up the motor home.
We enjoyed a leisure rest of the weekend at Camp Red Bay. Greg was waiting to pull us in. Our list was pretty simple here, just a few adjustments here and there. However, since we had been operating with no jacks over the last few months, we wanted to make sure that the big slide on the driver's side was not out of adjustment.
We told the techs that it had been a little on the sluggish side. So, after a brief consultation, we decided that it was time for a new motor. Wow, it never operated so slick! We also had one recall they addressed. It had to do with adding a fuse to the front and rear clearance lights.
